Wus Poppin" is the title of the show-and-tell performance that took place on Nov 12th culminating a one-week Works & Process LaunchPAD creative residency at The Pocantico Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. In the residency, Hip-Hop legends Kwikstep and Rokafella gathered dancers representing various generations of New York City’s Poppin community to facilitate intergenerational transference of knowledge.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, Rokafella, Kwikstep, and this NYC Poppin collective led a conversation on the traditions and local iterations of Poppin—a street-dance style that originated in California and was built upon by New York City dancers known as Electric Boogie aka Boogie-ing. Video clips and testimonials shared by the dancers was followed by a group dance demonstration that celebrated and demonstrated the genre’s technique and soulful resilience.
Thank you to Duke and Caroline for your efforts to give this and many other underground dance genres a platform to shine.
